Illustrations to the chapter “Torn”
In time
of war the building with chimneys looked the same, but was painted dark grey.
There was no green peeping out from behind the wall. The wall was overbuilt
with metal bars covered by barbed wire. Behind the wall there was barbed-wire fence. Watchman
with tommy-gun walked along this fence. Behind the trees you can’t see a
hillside where a dungeon was dug up, which was locked with metal heck at
night. Concrete floor of the dungeon was covered with plank deck with aisle
in the middle, which served as plank bed. |
