At the end of November, 1943 the forces of the 17-th cavalry division attempted to break through the German defenses. I well remember troops of the third and fourth divisions were standing along the edges of the road and holding the saddled horses by the bridle, they looked forward to hear the command "On horses! " and rushing in the enemy rear at daybreak. Cars charged of shells and mines were going in an continuous stream to the first line of defence and woundes were returning from on vehicles and on foot. This attempt was failed, and the corps was involved in hard battles, whose vestiges: half filled up trenches and artillery positions still stay in the forest not far from this monument.
